Five Favorites

Do you ever get inspired to just be creative and can't decide what the outlet should be?  To make a great outfit, to do a fun DIY project, to go photographing, to organize everything you own??  This weekend has been one of those weekends, and here it is Sunday and I haven't really channeled my creativity anywhere specifically yet.  It's so hard to decide!  I considered making a run to Michael's but it's just so beautiful today in Michigan that I couldn't spend one minute in a store.  I'll save that for one of those rainy monsoon days we seem to be having so much this year.

So today I sit in my screened porch, drinking iced tea, looking out into my garden, and listening to the birds while I gather images for this post.

Summer dishes from Neiman Marcus... who wouldn't want to use these for a summer party?

I would love to sit on that couch in the window while I read my book.  Found this image while flipping through Styleline Magazine this morning.

This jean jacket from Gap is exactly what my wardrobe is missing.

I want this to be me.  Too bad I don't have an appropriate tree for a swing in my backyard.  Photo by Augustus Butera.

Just beautiful.  Photo by Cade Martin.

I hope you enjoy what caught my eye today!
Happy Sunday!

Striped Like A Sailor

I must say, I love that sailor stripes have become so popular the last couple years.  J.Crew always has a good supply, and I also recently discovered the site which I plan on ordering from after I post this blog.  I got inspired from a photograph I saw of Lauren Conrad sporting the trend and dug through my closet to try and make my own version.

shirt: American Eagle c. 2009
jeans: American Eagle c. 2010
shoes: Merona c. 2011
necklace: gift
ring: H&M c. 2008
purse: Element c. 2010

I also put together a collage for your enjoyment (based off of the inspiration photo for this outfit):
inspiration: Lauren Conrad
jeans: Old Navy
purse: Nu-G
ring: Forever21
shoes: Aldo
shirt: Forever21
tazo tea: yum

For many months I've been adoring the shoes on LC's feet, only to finally discover that they're Miu Miu and are way way way out of my price range.  So I settled for the Target wedges above.  However, I recently found the above look-a-likes at Aldo (very very tempted to buy!! Must...resist...)

Indiana from Adored Austin recently posted an entry on the oh-so-lovely Delightful Dozen blog about striped shirts, and I couldn't agree with her more.  I, too, have always disliked wearing stripes.  But now, with the return of the classic sailor-esque style once seen on Coco Chanel, I'm loving it!

Men's Suits Through The Decades

Happy Father's Day!  To celebrate, I decided to bring you something a little different today: Men's Fashion.  I've put together a little visual collection of men's suits through the decades.  Wonder what your dad wore when he was younger?  What about your grandpa?  Great-grandpa?  Probably something below.

I found all of these great images from, so if you're interested in reading a little history on the subject, check out their site!

Today I'm heading out to the EyesOn Design Car Show at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford Estate (Ford, as in the car company) in Grosse Pointe Shores.  Every year on Father's Day the estate hosts this great event centered around automotive design (another one of my design-loves).  The property is filled with beautiful cars from the decades.  I usually end up gravitating toward the 1950s beauties with their fabulous colors, flashy chrome, and fins galore!  So expect some fashion pics from the show to appear in an upcoming post!

Until next time!

Classic Style Lasts Forever

So while looking at some magazines the other day I kept finding myself drawn to clothes and accessories made by Michael Kors. Why? What is it about his line that I like so much?

Clockwise from top left: Designer Michael Kors, bathing suit from spring 2009 collection, Michael Kors Hamilton bag

It's the clean lines, the structure, the figure flattering shapes that transcend trends and time. A lot of his clothes, like this bathing suit, have a retro flair to them as well, which I absolutely love! As I've moved on from the high school staple of t-shirt and jeans and the college wardrobe of sweats and bedhead hair, I've found myself gravitating toward this retro-classic-structured style that can make even a simple outfit look expensive and put together. Unfortunately, I'm still living on a college budget so finding items that match this style without spending big money can be an issue. Here are some of my favorite finds from my own closet:

Lela Rose for Payless tote

faux snakeskin bag from Target

The purple snakeskin bag? I found that in the clearance section at Target for $4... only $4!! I was amazed! It looks so much more expensive than that and it's so versatile. I can use it as a clutch for night by taking off the strap or I can keep it on and add some fun color, structure, and texture to my day look. I love it! Ha ha can you tell I like purses? I think I have a strange addiction to them. I read somewhere that the average woman has about six handbags... I think I have about twenty. But with prices like this one, how can I resist?

Until next time...

For A Rainy Day

I don't know about you, but Michigan has seen a lot of rainy weather this spring (too much, actually... I didn't know Michigan had a monsoon season, seriously).  Well, of course, my umbrella broke recently and now I have to search around for a new one asap!  No success yet, but my problem made me think of one of my favorite photographs by Richard Avedon.  This woman is just so elegant with her classic black umbrella.  While I'll probably be looking for something flowery or bright colored, the classic black umbrella will always reign as Queen of Umbrellas in my mind.

And, for kicks:

I found this image while searching around for my new umbrella.  I wonder how that folds up?

Until next time!

A List to Start the Summer With

Hello everyone! My first blog post, hooray! I thought it would be a good idea to start things off with a list I made for the summer. A list of essentials that will make my wardrobe current but also still fit in my teeny weeny closet. Plus it'll help to keep me from shopping frivolously, so here it is...

1. A floppy hat (for those oh-so-sunny days)
2. A wicker bag/tote, perfect for beach-going or shopping in the farmer's market
3. Fun colored/patterned/lace shorts
4. Swimsuit coverup
5. A cool water bottle I don't mind carrying with me at all times
6. Fedora (I'm a fan of mixing masculine and feminine touches)
7. Maxi dress
8. Gold watch
9. A black STURDY belt (since all of mine keep falling apart)

and last but not least....

10. A HUGE cocktail ring that'll make a statement

I actually just bought a pair of fun shorts from

I plan on wearing them sometime this week so pics will be coming soon! They're the perfect way to stay cool and still be stylish even in the sweltering 97 degree weather.

So readers, what's on your list of must-haves for the summer?

Till next time...

What better way to start the day?

Hello and welcome to Cup of Tea!  I'm very excited to start in on the style blogging.  It's sometimes feels like a bit of a daunting task (especially after being a reader of so many great and successful style blogs!) but I'm giving it a go anyway!  So please, bear with us (Samantha and me) while we get in the groove.

What is a better way to start the day than some inspiration for your feet?

I recently added these two styles to my closet... or rather, I'm anxiously awaiting their arrival in the mail.  (Online shopping = dangerous.... in a good way!)  I'm trying to fill in the basics-gaps.  I have plenty black strappy shoes but realized I have no brown!  And the opposite was true with flat sandals.  My only flat sandals in black happen to be my good ol' Old Navy $5 flip flops...and sometimes you just want to look a little nicer.

I tend to buy shoes in either brown or black (boring, I know).  Since I usually use the shoes to pull together an already great outfit, for me, they don't usually seek center attention.  The few brightly colored pairs of shoes I own tend to sit there and only get worn every once and a while because they don't seem to go with many of my clothes.  Hopefully soon I'll have some outfit pictures to share with you that include these awesome new finds.

Until next time...
