Exhale. It's Friday!

Exhale.  It's Friday!  I'm ready to sit back and relax this weekend.  And that's just what I'm going to do!  I plan on packing up and driving north to stay at my family's cottage for the weekend.  It will be nice to be disconnected from technology and just sit by the lake with my book.  Ahh.  Yay for weekends.

Speaking of weekends, last weekend I went to one of my friend's bachelorette parties.  (Wait, my friends and I are old enough to get married?  When did that happen?  Oh growing up...)  The night was pretty fun and I got to dress up for the occassion:

And I of course wore my trusty owl necklace that seems to be popping up in a lot of recent un-posted outfits (and also in my last posted outfit)

And yes, you are seeing that correctly.  One of my nails is painted white and the other four are painted light pink.  I've seen this everywhere lately and thought I'd try it out.  It's a cute idea, but I don't usually paint my nails so we'll see how often I actually wear them like that.

and my shoes:

I like these shoes for a couple reasons.  One reason is because they're nude colored, and I'm really into that right now (along with the rest of the fashion world).  But the more important reason I like them is because they are not outrageously high where my foot would be bent at a ridiculous angle while wearing them.  Once and a while I'll spring for the insanely high heel + platform, but I mostly want to take care of my feet so I'll still be able to a)walk and b)wear cute shoes when I'm older.

Anyone else thinking ahead with their shoe decisions?  No?  Okay, suit yourself.

On a different note, many thanks to Bow Tied Beauty & Tales From An Unknown Spacecraft for awarding Cup of Tea the One Lovely Blog Award:

It was so thoughtful and sweet of both of them.  It's always nice to know that some people out there actually read Cup of Tea, and not only read it but they liked it enough to award it.  Thanks again!

And speaking of readers, yesterday Cup of Tea hit 20 Google Friend Connect readers.  That is a really low number compared to the other blogs I read, but still... yay that's progress!  I know there are a lot of non-Google Friend Connect followers out there too, and Cup of Tea appreciates all of you as well! :)

Anyone else have any relaxing plans for the weekend?

Until next time...

Links à la Mode

Style is what you make it. We are all different and beautiful in our own ways. Many of us have different techniques to display how we want to present ourselves. Some people are very "structured" "prim and proper" and live by a color scheme while others go wild with mixing patterns and have the "unpolished" and "don't care" look. It's all about where you get your inspiration from and your personality in general.

Here are some classic quotes on style:

  • "Fashion fades, style is eternal." -YSL
  • "Fashion is not something that exist only in dresses. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening." -Coco Chanel
  • "'Style' is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style." -John Fairchild

On the shores, In the forest

Here at last: the photos from June 19th.  I've finally got them all edited and prepared for posting!  These photos were taken in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, on the grounds of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate.  Every year on Father's Day I attend the EyesOn Design Car Show that takes place at the estate.  The property is absolutely amazing.  It's located right on Lake St. Clair.

One of the fun things about this outfit, for me, was the belt.  My uncle made this belt for my older sister back in 1994 when she was 9 years old.  The funny part is that my sister jokingly pulled it out from her closet for me to wear, only to discover that it actually fit me!  (Now remember, she wore this around her hips and I have it around my waist so don't go making any assumptions).

and also one from the actual car show:

I love old cars!

dress: Xhilaration
belt: designed and made by my uncle in 1994
shoes: R2
necklace: gift
hat: Charlotte Russe

All of the above photographs were taken by my sister, Emily.

On a completely different note, I was very fortunate to be able to see Paul McCartney in concert last night at Comerica Park - Home of the Detroit Tigers!  It was an amazing concert!  I've been a fan of the Beatles basically my whole life since my parents would play them when I was little.  Then when I got to high school I discovered Wings, and his solo albums too.  Love love love!  Is it weird that I got all giggly-girly when he came out on stage and he's almost 70 years old?  But when I get googly-eyed at Paul, I'm really thinking about him like this:

ahhh so gorgeous.

Happy Monday!

Reunited in 3 weeks!

Great news!  Samantha and I will finally be reunited in exactly 3 weeks from today!  We're excited to get some pictures taken together during our breakfast meet up.  It's been over 4 months since we've seen each other last, and that is too long to go without seeing your best friend!

To recognize this exciting event, I wanted to post a picture of the two of us.  Then I realized that we haven't had a picture taken of just the two of us in a really really long time.  The most recent ones were of us looking not too fashionable............ so I decided on a throwback photo!  This one is from the summer of 2007, when we were fresh out of high school.  Oh good times...

Top: Samantha and Julia in 2007.  Bottom: Connecting Pittsburgh and Detroit!

We definitely look like youngins in that picture, but I've always loved it.
The Cup of Tea ladies will be together at last!

Happy Sunday!

Hot Hot Hot

Hot enough for you?  This week has been insanely hot in Michigan, as it has been in a lot of the country.  My car thermometer reported 101° yesterday when I left work at 5pm!  That might not seem crazy in some parts of the country, but up here in Michigan that is hot hot hot!

My car thermometer on 7/21/11

This past week's outfits have been all shorts, skirts, and dresses.  I wouldn't even dream about wearing long pants on these days, even in the air conditioning of work and my house.  So today I bring you this outfit:

tank: LC Lauren Conrad
shorts: Delia's
purse: Xhileration
shoes: R2
necklace: gift
watch: Paul Du Pree

Don't get me wrong, I love summer.  But when it's so hot that I feel sick without air conditioning that's no fun.  Let's hope that Mother Nature calms down a bit and gives us a normal mid-80s day soon.  That would be a more reasonable (and fun!) summer.

On a different note, I thought I'd bring you an easy idea to help you cool off during this heat wave.  Do you ever end up with too much fruit in your fridge that you know you won't be able to consume before it goes bad?  I hate that feeling.  The feeling I hate more, though, is throwing out fresh fruit that I let sit too long.  So to use up your fruit, make an easy and refreshing beverage: fruit water!  Basically, you fill up a pretty pitcher with cold water, cut up your fruit, and then put your fruit in the water.  Very simple.  And very very delicious.

What are you doing to cool off during this heat wave?

Stay cool!

Grosse Pointe Shores Preview...

Well it sure has been a busy week for me!  I've definitely been slacking in the blog department.  This past week has been full of summer fun.  Fun bar nights, beach outings, and lawn seats at a summer concert.  Because of my busy week, I do not have any new full outfit posts today.  But I have included a preview to an upcoming post, with photos taken by my wonderful older sister!  They were taken in beautiful Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan.

I'm fortunate to have a professional photographer for a sister.  Unfortunately she lives on the west side of the state (and I'm on the east side!) so she doesn't get to take as many blog photos for me as I would like.  In a perfect world she would be photographing all of them!  This photo shoot was done back in June but it's taken a long time to sort through pictures and edit them.  I'm super satisfied with this shoot and hope you will like it too!

Stay tuned for more from this same photo shoot!!

Anyone see the new Harry Potter movie yet?  I caught it on opening day and LOVED IT!  Definitely going to be seeing that one again soon!

Stay cool!

Carrie Flowers

Like a lot of women I know, I love the show Sex & The City (In my opinion, the first movie was excellent but it should have ended after that.  The second movie was so NOT excellent and was, at times, hard to sit through... anyone agree?).  There have been a million and a half fashion blog entries on the style of Carrie Bradshaw.  This I know.  As much as I love fashion, I wasn't always too into some of Carrie's outfits.  That being said, there were also a gazillion that I would love to have in my closet!

So the inspiration for this post was Ms. Bradshaw (and I'm very aware of the fact that I'm not the first one to have a blog entry with her as inspiration).

That's me above in "New York City".... and I have that in quotations because I wasn't actually there.  (Instead of driving into the city I decided to spend my time piecing this image together with Photoshop.  But I have to admit, I think I did a pretty good job!)

Above pictures were taken in my actual location: my back patio.  Also a neat place to hang out.

dress: Express
belt: Charlotte Russe
shoes: Mix No. 6
necklace: gift
clutch: vintage

And a collage I made of the inspiration-woman herself, and similar pieces for you to create a Carrie flower outfit! (And if you're lucky, maybe you'll get to strut your outfit in actual NYC, unlike me!)
inspiration: Carrie Bradshaw
shoes: G by Guess
clutch: Forever21
dress: Express (same as mine in a different print!)
belt: Banana Republic
necklace: Marc by Marc Jacobs

Do you have any favorite Carrie Bradshaw outfits?  Or any Carrie Bradshaw outfits you hated?  Do tell!

Until next time!

$12.12

This evening I decided to check out Value World with my friend Paris.  It usually takes a lot of searching to find anything worth buying but we both came out of there with a few new things!

My receipt totaled $12.12... not bad for buying four things!
  • shoes: St. John's Bay (in almost new condition and half off!) = $1.80
  • bag: Nine West = $5.60
  • bandana: unmarked = $0.80
  • vintage alarm clock: Westclox Big Ben (an original!) = $3.23
I did some quick research into the alarm clock, and found that my model is from somewhere between 1949 and 1956.  Neat!  Plus I love the type style used for the numbers (hey, I'm a graphic designer, I notice these things!)

My only disappointment was that I found a really cool leather belt with some awesome braiding in it.  Unfortunately the price wasn't marked and Value World doesn't let you buy it if it's unmarked... so I had to forfeit my prized belt.  Oh well....

Until next time!
P.S.
Thanks for all of the nice comments, new followers!  It's very encouraging!  :)

Dancing Taupe

I've been pretty lucky with finding people to take my picture for this blog.  My sister, my parents, and my friends have all taken a crack at it.  But what happens when nobody's available to help?  Well, that's when it's time to call in Ol' Trusty.  And no, I'm not talking about the bloodhound in Lady and the Tramp (although he was very trusty... very appropriate name choice, Disney).  I'm talking about my stepladder.  It took a while to get some decent shots and the focusing was sometimes an issue, but in the end I think I got some decent photos.

shirt: Express
shorts: Forever21
sweater (? not sure what you'd call it): Forever21
necklace: gift
ring: gift
shoes: Soda

I love wearing black.  The bad thing about it though, is that it doesn't photograph well.  My shirt has ruffles in the front, and my shorts have faint pin-stripes and pleats making them "dressy" shorts.  Both of those things failed to show up in these pictures.  I wore this outfit to work, but had skinny jeans and my black Merona wedges instead of the shorts and Soda shoes.  Since summer is finally (!) officially here in Michigan I had to switch to shorts when I got home.  Last weekend it was 98 degrees in my area!!  Okay summer, just chillax... why don't you give us more 82 degree days?  Oh well.  I wait all winter for this weather so I shouldn't be complaining too much.

and just for kicks...
Thanks stepladder!  Your camera holding abilities were much appreciated for this post!  (I'm sure we'll become better friends as this blog continues...)

Happy hot weather!

Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!  In my recent post, Striped Like A Sailor, I mentioned that I was going to purchase another striped shirt from a new site I had found.  Well I followed through on that and ended up with a fantastic outfit for the 4th!  Laura from StripedShirt.com was so helpful in the process.  When I was having computer troubles at checkout, she responded to my help! email very quickly and made sure I got my shirt!  It's refreshing to come across people who make the effort to please their customers.  I've told numerous people about her site and how cool it is.  So check it out if you're in the market for a striped shirt!

I made a couple different versions of my 4th of July outfit.  I went back and forth with switching from heels to converse, from shorts to a skirt, trying to come up with an All-American look.

shirt: StripedShirt.com
skirt: vintage (my mom's actually!)
shorts: LC Lauren Conrad
shoes (sneakers): Converse Chuck Taylor
shoes (heels): vintage (also my mom's!)
bracelets: vintage

While shopping at Forever21, I came across a skirt that was practically identical to the one in this post.  Only mine was free, mine was vintage, and mine was worn by my mother.  I love that my style is not that different from what my mom's style was in the 70s.  It makes for great inspiration right from my parent's old photo albums!

Because of the many outfit variations for this post I've got a more-than-usual amount of photos to post.... but I hope you enjoyed them!  Now I'm off to continue with my festivities.  My sister and I are about to make some red/white/&blue desserts for tonight!

Have fun, stay safe, and light a sparkler!

Happy 4th of July!
