Designer + Nerd = Me

For someone who wears glasses every single day of the year, they become more of an accessory and not just a tool. Only problem is, they're pretty pricey and insurance only covers one pair. How excited was I when I stumbled across a DealChicken deal last summer for $200 off a pair of frames & lenses from Sears Optical! Now I know what you're thinking... Sears? Really? Luckily, I don't really care about brand names too much.

Welcome to the family, new glasses!  I feel the need to include a disclaimer here though: I am not a hipster, nor do I want to be one.  The fact that hipsters took the whole "big frames" trend as their own annoys me. For a while I felt like I couldn't get the frame style I liked because I would be accused of trying to be hipster-ish. But then I realized, hey, if I like the frames then I like the frames! I will wear what I like. So I got the frames.

It's funny how fashion is cyclical. I remember picking out my first pair at age 13 and wanting to stay as far away as possible from the horrible "big frames" of the early 90s. They're on their way baaaaack!

shirt: American Eagle | pants: H&M | shoes: Steve Madden

To me, they are the perfect combination of nerd and designer.  Both of which I am, so they fit me nicely.

Have you ever felt like you couldn't wear something you liked for the fear of being negatively judged?

Happy Sunday!

  1. I just got new glasses like that and my parents were kind of scratching their heads why. Mine are a little bigger than yours and I love them. Yours look awesome too.

  5. I haven't got new glasses for years! Although I wear contacts almost all the time now, so it doesn't really matter.

I love this outfit! I'm such a fan of denim shirts and black jeans :)

  6. You look gorgeous !! Do not pay any attention to that designer crap. I shop at Sears all the time, and I shop thrift so I just do not care. Anytime you save money you
are the smarter person. Cute outfit. Enjoy your new glasses, you rock the look. Lexie.

  9. The glasses look great on you, Julia! I got glasses in 3rd grade and I wanted them to be as small and unobtrusive as possible! Now I mostly wear my contacts although I think it's "in" to wear glasses now :)

  17. Ok, you are too cute! You definitely pull off those glasses, and I can tell you are most definitely not a hipster. I'm with you though, it's hard not to wear certain things, for the fear of being judged by others. Love your adorable blog! I'm so thrilled I stumbled upon it. Xo

  19. I love the chambray with the black jeans and the glasses look great on you. I used to fear wearing blazers because I thought people would think I like to dress like I am going to work but I love blazers so much that I don't really care and people do not think that anyways...

  20. I need to get a chambray shirt stat! I feel like I might be the only fashion blogger who doesn't have one. And I really want one! Who cares what people say about your glasses? They look amazing on you. I stopped caring long ago what people think about what I wear. I wear what I like no matter if people think I've lost my mind. :)

  21. Hey Julia!

Just found your blog through Sara from Sunny Blonde Studio & it's really cute! Your hair color is seriously amazing & the glasses look great on you! Oh & if you haven't already, you might want to check out Warby Parker for cheap/cute glasses. They are only $95 for lenses + frames & if you buy a pair they donate another to someone too. To be honest I haven't ordered from them yet, but I've been wanting to for a while! : )

Sry for the super long comment!

  23. I bought a pair of glasses recently with a slight cat eye shape to them because I've always loved the style and someone accused me of trying to be a hipster with them. I laughed pretty hard at that. I feel the same way you do - I wear what I wear because I like it!

  24. Your glasses look adorable! Great choice. I completely agree on the hipster-glasses-thieves sentiment! I recently got a new pair of black frames that are slightly bigger than my old ones and felt I was selling out, until I was like wait, this is what LOOKS the best on my face and I like them so who cares. Okay, done with my rant, your blog is lovely, hope you are having a terrific day!
