Shades of Brown

At work I'm working on a micro-site for the downtown of my neighboring city Ferndale.  It's focused on the art, the history, and the way downtown Ferndale makes efforts to "go green."  Yesterday I went down there to photograph a little for the site and thought it would be a good opportunity to also do another location post!

shorts: LC Lauren Conrad // black tank: H&M // crochet top: LC Lauren Conrad // belt: Target // shoes: Guess // necklace: c/o Oasap

While putting together this outfit, at first I was discouraged at the fact that the three items of brown were all different shades.  Turns out I like it more than I was expecting!  It also lends to a good post name.

I'm really loving the results when I venture off my property for some outfit photographing.  Sometimes it feels like so much work, especially when it's a million degrees out and I'm trying not to be too sweaty or pained-looking in photos, but the results are definitely worth it.  I spend so much of my time in my own downtown Royal Oak that I forget to venture out to the neighboring downtowns.  There are quite a few to choose from all within 15 minutes of my house!  Located right on 9 Mile (to put it in perspective to all of you non-Detroiters, has anyone seen the movie 8 Mile?  Yeah, I'm a mile from there.  Don't let that scare you, the difference a mile makes is drastic here) Ferndale has so many fun things going on!  And who doesn't like to pose by the Library Bookstore?  Perfect location for me.  I love the beauty in urban settings.  Something like wire cables on the side of a brick building seems photo-worthy.

And isn't that necklace super neat?  I got it care of Oasap.  Like I said in my last post when I mentioned them, they really have quite the eclectic mix of items there!  I was looking to expand my jewelry collection when Oasap offered me a store credit.  Perfect timing!  You should check. them. out.

Happy Monday friends!

The Croquet Master

This month for Tea Time I decided to create a fictional lawn party to attend.  Now, I've never actually been to one so this is all a figment of my imagination.  I don't even know how to play croquet, but oh well, it would be at my party.  And at my imagination-lawn-party not only do I know how to play croquet but I'm a master of it too!

I've had this croquet set in my shed for my entire life.  I love it.  I believe it belonged to a grandparent. Or parent?  Either way, it's cool.

Take note!  I am wearing different glasses!  I don't think these frames have made an appearance on this blog yet.  I got them about a month ago and I'm so happy with them!  These count as being my "adventurous" frames.  Add that to my "safe" pair (standard rectangle dark plastic), and my "hipster-that-aren't-really-hipster" pair (bigger rectangled dark plastic with little fake stones at the corners) and I have a well-rounded set of specs to choose from!

glasses frames: Versace // dress: Delia's ca. 2009 // shoes: Target ca. 2009 //
bracelets: gifts // seafoam ring: Stella & Dot ca. 2011 //
silver ring: Grand Rapid's Artist Market ca. 2012

Tomorrow I'm going to "Zoomance" at the Detroit Zoo.  It's an after-hours, over-21, couples event where they serve you alcohol while you stroll the zoo.  I'm so excited to sip wine and say hello to Homer the Sloth!  If he decides to grace me with his presence.  The last few times I've been to the zoo he's been out-of-view.  Not acceptable, Homer.  Not acceptable.

Back to Tea Time, any suggestions for September's theme?  I'm open to ideas, please share them in the comments! :)

Tea Time {lawn party}

For the conclusion of summer, it's time for a last big hurrah!  What better way to do that than to have an end of summer Lawn Party?  See how this month's two guests styled their looks!

Check out Jessica's blog, The Jessica L Blog

Check out Tara's blog, Penniless Socialite

I've never actually been to an official lawn party but I imagine it to consist of summer dresses, sunhats, cocktails, and games of croquet.

For the past week or so, Michigan weather has been chilly in comparison to the outrageous heat we've had this summer.  It's been a nice break and it's making me look forward to the upcoming fall months!  So even though it's still summer, I decided to go back to serving hot tea.

I hope you enjoyed this month's Tea Time!  Be sure to check out Jessica and Tara's blogs! I'm so happy they took part in my tea party.

I'm out of ideas... what should the theme be for September?  I'm taking suggestions! :)

Up The Spiral Staircase

A couple weekends ago my sister and I decided to go out and explore a part of our home state we'd both never seen before.  Being Michiganders, we're pretty used to be close to fresh water but neither of us had been to a lighthouse in many many years!  My sister lives over on the west side of the state not far from Lake Michigan, which is loaded with lighthouses.

This lighthouse was the nearest one that allows people to go inside.  This place was filled with such neat history!  It was fun to look out to Lake Michigan, but let me just say that those spiral staircase steps get very tiny near the top!

Happy Monday!

Grandma's Tea Cup

A little over a week ago I started sharing photos from a shoot I did with my friend Lauren of Lauren Mac Design.  Here is part two!  In these photos I used my grandma's old tea cup as my prop.  Very fitting eh?

I would like to thank you all for the great comments on my last post.  They all were very positive and I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in those thoughts.  I think I've reached a point where I need to mix up my routine a little and not be so hard on myself with getting posts up.  As much as I love blogging, I love living life too.  For the next month or so I probably won't be online as much as I have been.  I still look forward to reading your posts but I won't be able to comment as frequently.  Please know that I'm still here and would love to stay connected!  I hope to return to a blogger routine once the summer wraps up, but until then I want to enjoy the last sounds of summer.  The long days, the sounds of crickets, a book in my lap.

I have a few posts lined up (including August's Tea Time!) for the upcoming weeks so don't think I'm leaving!  You can't scare me off that easily :)

Happy Wednesday!

Lost in Thought

A couple weekends ago I went on a fun double date with the boyfriend.  We met one of his friend's from college and his girlfriend downtown for dinner and drinks and it was really fun!  Sitting outside is one of the best things about dining in the summer!

On a different note, I almost didn't post this.  I've been feeling very introspective the past few days and I'm really having thoughts about this blog.  It seems like lately I've been getting really overwhelmed with the amount of Internet-sharing that has creeped into my life.  Is anyone else just burned out?  Don't get me wrong, I love that the fashion-blogging community has welcomed me into the club with so many kind comments, emails, and gifts.  I guess I'm starting to get bothered by the amount of superficial-ness that is included in all of this.  I don't like that so many people in the community use commenting as self-promotion.  What happened to commenting because you genuinely like an outfit or have something thoughtful to say?  Again, I feel like I need to have a disclaimer here.  I know that not all of you are like this.  In fact, most of you aren't, and I really love reading your comments and I love the little Internet-blogger-friendships that have formed in the past year.

But when does the sharing get to be too much?  When we all post the same stuff?  When we all wear the same stuff?  When we all share Instagram photos of our macaroons and our new mint-colored nail polish?  When we all apply lens-flare filters to our Instagram pictures even though they were taken indoors?  When we all wear denim chambray shirts and mint skinny jeans (haha look at my last post!!)  I'm sorry, sometimes it just gets a bit overwhelming.  I totally understand that these are trends and that I, too, participate in them a lot.  But I start to wonder, would I dress the same if I didn't read fashion blogs?  Would I be happy with my style?  Would I get stressed out because I hadn't posted in a few days?  Would I feel rushed to read through all of the blogs I follow, comment on their outfits, and then hope that they haven't unsubscribed to my blog because I disappeared for a few days?  What kind of fun is that?  It's when I feel pressured to comment that my comments lose quality.  And it sucks, because there are a handful of you out there that I really do get very inspired by.  I love to tell you that too!

Am I alone in these thoughts?  If I made my Instagram photos private, and put an ON HIATUS sign on my blog, would I be happier?  I don't know.  And I'm not sure if I'm quite ready to find out.  But the thought is there.  I guess it's an ideal time to go camping!  Because that's what I'm doing this weekend.  I'm taking Friday and Monday off of work and am going to spend my four days camping on Lake Michigan with my boyfriend, his sister (who happens to be my best friend!) and their family.  I'm going to enjoy my actual life.  To those of you who actually read all of this, thanks!  You're probably the same people that I genuinely like you, your blog, and your comments.

Thanks for reading!  I'll be back next week :)
